Tommy Aylmer is a Managing Director at Tifosy Capital & Advisory, a leading boutique investment bank specialising in professional sports. Since joining Tifosy in 2017, Tommy has been part of the buildout of firm’s M&A advisory practice and its private credit strategy which has overseen deployment of more than €375m of sports financing. Tommy has been part of many of Europe’s largest sports deals and his expertise across sports M&A, financing, deal structuring, negotiation and regulation has positioned him as a leading figure in Europe’s sports investment sector.
M&A Advisory and Financing
Tommy’s advisory experience extends across sports including professional football, motorsports, sailing, tennis and cycling. Notable transactions include advising on the €875m takeover of Olympique Lyonnais, Oaktree’s €275m financing of Inter Milan and subsequent takeover, Blackstone’s bid in the Bundesliga MediaCo procecss, Ares $150m investment into Inter Miami, the acquisition of SailGP Italy, the sale of SM Caen to Kylian Mbappe’s firm and significant capital raises for Melbourne Victory and Royal Antwerp. He also has a deep understanding of the financing market in professional sports and sits on the investment committee of Tifosy Sports Credit which has deployed more than €375m in financing to support over 25 football clubs across the UK and Europe.
Trends in Private Equity and Multi-Club Ownership
Tommy has a unique perspective on institutional investment in sports given Tifosy’s close connection to many of the private equity funds, hedge funds, alternative asset managers and professionally managed family offices that have focused on the sports sector in recent years. Among other blue-chip institutions, Tommy has advised on deals for Oaktree, Ares, BC Partners, Blackstone, Avenue Capital and Qatar Sports Investments. Tommy has also worked with several multi-club and multi-sport ownership groups giving him a deep understanding of the benefits and considerations of pursuing such strategies.
Deal Strategy, Structuring and Negotiation
Tommy started his career as a corporate lawyer and leverages his legal background as part of Tifosy’s financial advisory work. As deal lead on strategy, structuring and negotiation of commercial terms (equity/debt term sheets, share purchase agreements, shareholder agreements, syndicated loan arrangements etc.) he is known for his strong technical skills and deep sector-specific insight, enabling the successful execution of complex M&A transactions.
Tommy holds a double major in Business and Law from University College Dublin and professional solicitor qualifications from the Law Societies of Ireland and England & Wales.
