Thomas Peeters is Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Applied Economics at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), renowned for his expertise in sports economics and applied industrial organization. He also coordinates the Erasmus Center for Applied Sports Economics (ECASE), further solidifying his central role in sports economics research and collaboration at the university.
With a PhD in applied economics from the University of Antwerp, Thomas Peeters brings a rigorous academic background to his teaching and research. Before joining Erasmus, he conducted research as a fellow at the Flanders Research Foundation and was a visiting research scholar at the University of Michigan. His scholarly interests are at the intersection of sports economics, strategy, innovation, and industrial organization.
Thomas Peeters’ research investigates fundamental questions surrounding the economics of professional sport, including topics such as media rights, competitive balance in leagues, transfer system, and revenue sharing mechanisms. He has contributed widely-cited articles to prestigious academic journals, including Management Science, Economic Policy, Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization, International Journal of Industrial Organization, and Labour Economics. His work on issues such as collective media rights sales and competitive balance, financial fair play, and the effect of mega-events on local economies has influenced both scholarly debate and policy.
He is also recognized for his commitment to open science and impactful research dissemination. In recent years, Thomas Peeters was awarded the ERIM Open Science Award (2023), the ERIM Top Article Award (2022), and the Erasmus School of Economics Societal Impact Award (2019), testifying to both the quality and social relevance of his scholarship.
Thomas Peeters’ teaching covers sports economics, firm strategy, and industrial organization, inspiring a new generation of economists with the latest insights from the field. He is a research fellow at the Tinbergen Institute and an active member of the Erasmus Research Institute in Management (ERIM).
