Jan ZGLINSKI
Associate Professor at London School of Economics (LSE) Law School
Dr. Jan Zglinski is an Associate Professor at LSE Law School and a leading authority in European Union law and sports law, with a particular focus on the governance of sport and the development of a European Sport Model. He holds degrees from the Universities of Hamburg, Paris, and Oxford, and earned his PhD from the European University Institute. His academic journey includes visiting positions at Yale Law School and NYU Law School, and prior appointments such as the Erich Brost Lecturer at the University of Oxford.
Dr. Jan Zglinski’s research is distinguished by its breadth and depth across EU constitutional and internal market law, as well as the regulation and governance of sport. He is recognized for his empirical legal approaches and is a Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law. His teaching at LSE includes courses such as "Sports: Law and Governance" and "Law of the European Market," reflecting his expertise in both fields.
A central theme in Dr. Zglinski’s work is the reform of sports governance at the European level. He has published extensively on the intersection of EU law and sport, including the legal and regulatory challenges posed by high-profile cases such as the European Super League. In collaboration with FairSquare, he authored the policy brief Laws for the Games, which argues for a stronger role for the EU in sports governance, highlighting the failures of self-regulation in bodies like FIFA and advocating for greater public oversight. His proposals emphasize the need for EU legislation to ensure good governance, human rights, social responsibility, and protections for athletes and fans, as detailed in his co-authored European Sports Act proposal.
Dr. Jan Zglinski’s scholarship on the European Sport Model explores both its cultural foundations—such as local identity, sporting merit, and solidarity—and its governance structures, analyzing how EU law can protect and enhance these values in the face of commercial and regulatory pressures. His work is widely cited in academic, policy, and media circles, and he serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Legal Studies.
Through his research, teaching, and policy engagement, Dr. Jan Zglinski has become a prominent voice in debates on the future of European sport, advocating for legal frameworks that balance the integrity of sport with the demands of a changing European landscape.
