Melchior Wathelet Jr. is a Belgian politician turned motorsport executive who currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of both Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps SA and Spa Grand Prix, the official promoter of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix. Melchior Wathelet Jr. pursued a career in law and politics, serving as a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives and later as Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, and subsequently as Minister of Pensions in the Michel I Government (2014–2015). In 2017, he succeeded François Cornelis as Chairman of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and in early 2018 he also took over as Chairman of Spa Grand Prix, following Étienne Davignon. This dual appointment placed him at the helm of both the historic Belgian circuit and the organization responsible for bringing Formula 1 to Belgium.

Under Melchior Wathelet’s leadership, Spa-Francorchamps has navigated a period of significant change in the Formula 1 landscape, including infrastructure upgrades, fan experience enhancements and complex negotiations with Liberty Media. In January 2025, he announced a multi-year contract extension securing the Belgian Grand Prix on the F1 calendar for 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031, albeit on a rotational basis as part of F1’s strategy to limit European races to eight per season. Wathelet has been vocal about the challenges of these negotiations, noting that while the hosting fee increased by 3–4% from 2026, the agreement provides medium-term stability and reflects mutual trust between the circuit and F1.

He has also overseen major investments in spectator infrastructure, including the inauguration of new grandstands and terraces that increased capacity by 10,000 and improved hospitality offerings. Following the tragic death of CEO Nathalie Maillet in 2021, Wathelet played a key role in stabilizing the organization and appointing Amaury Bertholomé as her successor in 2022. In March 2023, his mandate as Circuit Chairman was renewed for five years, underscoring stakeholder confidence in his stewardship.
